Super Bowl LX is a highly anticipated rematch of Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. The Super Bowl is this weekend February 8th at 5:30pm. Both teams sit with only 3 losses to their names and strong defenses.
The Seattle Seahawks won the NFC west division this season and are the NFC champions. They are led by star wide receiver Jaxon Smith Nijgba and a top defense in the league. This young talented team is held together by veteran quarterback Sam Darnold who is the 2nd quarterback ever to go 14-3 in back to back regular seasons. Sam speaks on his mindset going into this season, “It’s always just been about putting in hard work, every single day.” Seattle’s defense consists of 3 pro bowlers this year in Devon Witherspoon(CB),Leonard Williams(DL), and Ernest Jones IV(LB). This defense is getting called the 2nd generation of Legion of the Boom. They let up 17.2 points per game this season in the regular season (lowest points allowed in the league).
On the other side of the bracket the New England Patriots are 17-3 and coming off winning the AFC Championship against the Denver Broncos. New England’s 2nd year quarterback Drake Maye has exceeded all expectations this year taking his team all the way to a Super Bowl. He is 4th in passing yards and 3rd in passing touchdowns in the whole NFL, all while only throwing 8 interceptions. Some are saying he has the potential to be the next Tom Brady. On the opposite side of the football the Patriots defense has been a problem to opposing teams all year long. During the playoffs they have only let up 26 points from opposing teams which is an average of 8.6 points per game.
These two teams have a history of meeting each other in the Super Bowl and in the regular season. In 2015 the Seattle Seahawks were known as the best team in football and were coming off of a Super Bowl ring from the year before. But the Patriots and Tom Brady fought hard to get a 28-24 lead in the last minutes of the game. Seattle was in a position to score at the goal line and ended up throwing an interception to Malcom Butler. And just like that the game was over. The next year the Seahawks and Patriots put on another thriller of a game where both quarterbacks threw for over 300 passing yards each. But Seattle and Pete Carroll avenged themselves with a 31-24 victory over Brady and New England.
