Open gyms for basketball have started this week. Coach Cluver and Coach Nightingale have been able to get gym space every time volleyball has a game. If you are looking for a complete schedule of the open gyms for the rest of the month, see Mr. Cluver in his classroom.
Open gyms are a lot better when we have a lot of people show up. It’s hard to run an open gym without a lot of kids there so we need as many kids to show up as we can. The more kids we have the easier the players can put together drills and do everything without having to shorten drills.
Before attending, know that Coach Cluver and Coach Nightingale are there, but they aren’t allowed to coach. The players have to be the ones who set up drills for the open gym because it is against IHSA rules for a coach to start coaching until basketball practices start. For open gyms, usually the players will come up with a drill plan beforehand. This doesn’t mean you can’t ask Coach Cluver or Nightingale questions about things. They can answer questions and help with timed drills, they just can’t set drills up and tell you what to do.
Open gyms will be next week on Monday and Tuesday after school at 3:30. The more people that can show up the better. So if you’re a basketball player not playing a fall sport, show up!
