Going on a hike is a great way to get out and get some exercise, while exploring nature’s beauty. Going on hikes is one of the most simple yet rewarding ways to experience the outdoors. It allows people to slow down, breathe fresh air and get a little break from the constant rush of daily life. It is great for your body, not only physically but also mentally, reducing stress levels and improving your overall mood. Going on a hike is something you can enjoy with friends or family, with your dog, or by yourself.
Sometimes it can be tricky to find the best hiking spots if you’re unfamiliar with the parks, so here is a list of my favorite places to go hiking within 1.5 hrs of Mackinaw, IL. First on the list is Matthiessen State Park.
Matthiessen is located in Oglesby, IL about an hour and 15 minutes away from Mackinaw. This park is 1938 acres, with 5 miles of hiking trails. There are beautiful canyons and waterfalls (especially after it rains) and trails that weave through the rock formations.
Next up we have McNaughton park
This is an 850 acre park with up to 7 miles of hiking trails, located in Pekin IL. It is more of a woodsy hike, although there are beautiful lakes and creeks to pass through on the trails. These trails are also open to mountain bikers and specific ones to horseback riders.
It also has a dog park for you to let fur babies run around and have fun at!
Last on the list is Detweiller Park, made up of 760 acres with 6 trails intertwined. These trails have many steep bluffs above the river, along with creek crossings, bridges, and a tunnel section. Detweiller park is located in Peoria IL, about 30 minutes from Mackinaw.
Going on hikes offers more than just a walk through the park, it allows us to disconnect from stress while staying active and exploring nature’s wonders. Spending time on trails reminds us of the importance of appreciating nature’s views around us and enjoying its natural beauty.
