The students of Dee-Mack High School are highly involved in many activities, many of which we have recognized on this page. Something that we have yet to highlight are some of our athletes and performers who participate in things beyond the school district. We want to highlight some of these people and their accomplishments as a reminder that our dreams are not limited by the scope of our small town. The first student we’ve decided to highlight is Addison Born. Addison is a sophomore at Dee-Mack High School and is someone you would likely recognize as one of the leaders on our cheerleading team. What many people do not know about Addison is that she is also a figure skater!
Addison competes under the Central Illinois Figure Skating Club- Bloomington and trains very hard to be able to show up as her best. She skates in either Peoria or Bloomington for 90 minutes before school on Mondays and Wednesdays, an hour on Saturdays, and occasionally for two hours on Thursdays after school. During these practices, she generally starts with a warm up, then a program runthrough without spins or jumps, then ends off her training with spins and jumps. When asked what she likes about figure skating, she said, “I like that it’s difficult and challenges me. I also get to meet new people from all over the country!” She enjoys figure skating so much that she plans to coach once she is 16.
Addison has been skating since she was seven years old and said, “I think I started skating because I watched Frozen and decided I wanted to skate”. She explained as well that her main goal is to score her personal best in every competition. Furthermore, she explains that scoring is based on three things, execution of elements such as jumps and spins, your presentation/competition, which means the skaters story telling, and finally the skating skills, which refers to the skating between the jumps and spins.
Addison’s passion for figure skating is a beautiful example of the fact that we are not limited to trying new things within our school and community. If you want to try something new, even if just because a fictional character is making it look fun, this is your reminder to start getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and do it!
We hope to highlight more students at Dee-Mack High School who are following their passions beyond the score of the school, so reach out to us through [email protected] to fill us in on what you are passionate about!
