Cody Myers is a physical education teacher here at dee-mack higschool, he’s been teaching here for 6 years. He is also a head coach for the football team. I chose this teacher bcause he developed me as a player and a person for 4 years. He’s helped build a rich tradition here at dee-mack.
How long have you been teaching? When and why did you decide to become a teacher?
Mr. Myers: Ive Been teaching 13 years, I had a good expriece playing sports with my friends and I learned a lot about who I was and what I wanted to do. My college coach really had an impact on me because seeing his dedication to us and he really wanted to know us more than just a football player, He was able to remember all sorts of facts about you, trying to be like that for you guys.
Who inspires you? What makes this person so influential to you?
Mr. Myers: The people that inspire me are the people before, like coach Limboom and Jim Mcdonlad. Just seeing the stuff they done for the program and how they built it like Limboom winning a state championship. These people have helped build all the sports not just football and also building the school and upgrading the weighroom and getting a better field and track.
What’s your favorite unit/lesson to teach? Walk us through what it looks like + why you like it so much!
Mr.Myers: My favorite thing to teach is probably a blocking scheme because you have to have all 11 players on the field working together at once. Everyone having the one piece of ownership , if all 11 people would do their job we would have success. He talks more about how they have been spoiled lately because some of the recent groups have been bought in and it makes it easier to win.
What’s your favorite memory from teaching so far?
Mr.Myers: When something is a dream or hope to those moments you actually accomplish something great”.When someone accomplishes something great that they never think they would never happen , seeing the looks on kids faces when they relaize they did something difficult and they didn’t fold up and they didn’t quit even in the good days and bad days, those are the most important parts for me throught weather its trying make playoff game or trying to win a playoff game, earn post season honors, be apart of the tradition, be all state or find a college that’s right for you. Trying to lead kids through those memories and I think that’s the most important thing when we look at it.
What’s something you wish your students knew?

Mr.Myers: Everybody thinks they have a ton of time , oh all start next week , when I’m a Junior I’ll kick it into gear or after basketball I’ll start locking in, when we dont play somebody bad this week I’ll start watching more film . Something i wish everyone knew is that times go so fast and you dont even realize that if you just do what’s asked on a daily basis , they would make so much more progress than waiting and seeing when they feel like it. Everybody works when they feel like it but the difference is that how do you work when you dont feel like it or how do you work when you’re coming off a tough loss or when you dont feel good or you got something going on in your home life. That’s how you figure out how you’re going to be as a program and a team. What kind of leader are you gonna be remembered as. In your job ,in your career , as a father , as a husband , those are the days that are gonna be super important because you’re not always gonna feel like doing it. On the other side of things I just wish people knew how much people care about them as indivusails.” I saw a quote the other day and a coach talking about how he said “ we are not their life but their are life . These kids are all gonna go on and do something more in their life, they’re gonna be a huge part of our lives”.” I see that every day with my 2 sons at home and how much they talk about our kids.
What were you like as a student? Has much of that changed since?
Mr.Myers: I was always a rule follower, I was somebody that was always doing what was aske, didnt get in trouble, always meeting deadlines, barely working hard enough to get by. I think what is changed is that I realize everyday I have an opportunity to give people even better moments than I had, so I just strive everyday to give our kids the best experience, sometimes that’s going through crappy moments to get to bigger moments, thats what I think thats really tough for people to realize is like whether is a volleyball court job or a tough practice or a tough loss. You’re still gonna be living tomorrow when you show up. How do you wanna set yourself up for success tomorrow and just always looking at the future and how hard I worked today is gonna directly affect how hard I have to work tomorrow and you can build some really good monemun with that.
Finish this statement: If I wasn’t a teacher, I …
Mr.Myers: I think I would be a business owner or a personal trainer. It would be hard for me not to be involved in something that I had to spend extra hours doing. If I just had to work till 5 and go home, my mind doesnt work like that. I always wanna strive to what can I do better, what can I do more , what can I achieve more.
What are you like outside of school? What do you spend your time doing?
Mr. Myers : My favorite thing is just spending time with my family, I love watching my kids grow up and love messing with them. Goofing around and playing sports with them.
How do you want to develop your students over the year?
Mr. Myers: Teaching them to one follow directions and two follow leaders, You are who you hand around. So if you hang out with a bunch of hard workers you’re gonna be a hard worker. If you hang out with a bunch of people that dont really care, that’s who you are gonna be. It is so hard for them to see it. You’re gonna be who you’re surrounded by , we just try to surround every group with as many hard workers. That should lead to our sports team having success.
How do you want students seeing yourself as a coach and teacher?
Mr.Myers: I think everyons just gonna remember how you made them feel, their memoires might not be the same ones I had. They’re gonna remember that we had some really good moments and I was here everyday working for them working hard trying to get things better , I think that’s what they’ll remember.
How do you motivate kids to work out every day?
Mr. Myers: I dont and I wish I had more of an impact on them. I can try to create a culture and a room. Where they want to come to your gym and workout but everyone has different things that motivate them and the worst part is every single person their own brain knows the things to tell them to shut down, “man I dont feel like doing it today” . “im sore” , “im tired”. It is up to them to motivate it and I just try to create a room that feels comfotnal and that everyone has something to do.
