Student section leaders are a new tradition for Dee Mack high school this year. Any student interested in becoming a leader is required to fill out a form with several questions, including why they should be chosen, what qualities make them the best choice, and how they plan to keep the student section positive and respectful. Signing the form is a promise to have continuous support, positive energy and leadership in and out of the student section. Mr Stokes chooses the leaders based on the responses on the form, the history of the student at the school and the attendance of students at games. At least one student section leader is expected to attend every game with an exception of a few away games. We have decided to make this a new tradition at Dee-Mack because we saw other teams with student section leaders and it inspired us to have some of our own to keep our student section loud and spirited throughout games.
Mr Stokes says, “the leaders are primarily seniors but there will be more students from each grade selected for the role when more applications are submitted. The role of the leaders is to keep energy up during downtime and during game time, while being respectful and supportive of our teams. The leaders are to be encouraging everyone to cheer loudly and stay lively throughout the games. They are given red and white overalls to stand out in the student section while still dressing the theme however possible.
Here’s what you should know according to the 25-26 Student section leaders. Bethany Owen and Jaelyn Nunley say the most important chant to know during games is the
“yell red red” chant. They also say, “participating in chants is important, because it gives the crowd energy and it has an uplifting effect on the players.”
Rease Kelley says the most crucial chant to know is the “DO IT DO IT” chant. Her advice for any freshman in the student section is to “participate in themes and cheers, if you don’t know them don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
Student section leader, Carson Knott says his plan to get the crowd hype is to “start chants and be loud” and his most important chant to know for volleyball games is “woosh” when serving.
Dalia Dejesus says the most important thing to know about our student sections is how many times to say the chant, which is always 3 times. Student section leaders are a great way to keep energy and support throughout our games.
Look for our student section leaders at every home game… they’re the ones in the bibs!
