Women across the world are celebrated every year during March, which is now known as Women’s History Month! Women’s History Month celebrates the astounding accomplishments of women and how far they have come in their fight for equality and rights. A few of the monumental moments in Women’s History involved strong, passionate women like Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, Abigail Adams, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and more! All of these women made a historical impact on the advancements of women’s rights.
Susan B. Anthony fought for women’s right to vote in addition to co-founding the National Women’s Suffrage Association. She had a powerful voice, using it lead to rallies and say passionate speeches! Rosa Park was a civil rights activist who fought for equality by taking a stand against racism! She refused to give up her seat on a bus, after a long day of work ,to a white man. Her acts against racism allowed her to start the Montgomery Bus Boycott! Abigail Adams supported women’s education and opposed slavery while standing by her husband, John Adams during his presidency. She made her voice clear by saying that she wanted a government that gave women more rights regarding legal issues so that they would not be under complete control of their husbands or fathers. Finally, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the very first woman to become a Supreme Court justice advocating for gender equality! This list could continue for days recognizing women who have made changes all across the world.
In the United States, a school district in Sonoma, California began celebrating a weeklong recognition of women’s culture, history, and society in 1978. Their small celebration ultimately led to the entire United States celebrating an entire month of women and everything that they have done to get to where they are today. Two years later, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week. The following year, Congress followed by passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. In 1990, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand to the entire month of March.
The National Women’s History Alliance designates a theme for Women’s History Month each year. This year it is “Moving Forward Together.” The theme is supposed to celebrate the strength, equality, and influence of women who have dedicated their lives to making this nation stronger through education, mentorship, and leadership. It serves to recognize women all over the world have been shaping the minds and futures of all the generations.
The United Nations have celebrated International Women’s Day since 1975. The United Nations stated that they were doing so in hopes to recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms requires active participation, equality and development of women. An additional cause for celebrating is to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace.
As international recognition of women and their contributions to the prospering life on earth becomes a higher priority, it is only right that we give the women of this world the whole month of March to recognize them!
