On Friday, October 4th, Dee-Mack High School will be hosting their 2nd annual Blackout for Easterseals Tailgate Party and Football Game! Being in a district who finds extreme community involvement in high school sports, especially football, Coach Myers wanted to find a way to bring more meaning to our Friday Night Lights. This initiative proved successful through highlighting Heroes of the Games and by putting together both a Salute to Service night as well as the Blackout for Easterseals night.
In order to raise money for Easterseals, the school sold shirts, sweatshirts, and tickets for a tailgate before the game on Friday night. Easterseals is an organization that serves our community incredibly well in a many ways. Easterseals’s mission is to provide individuals with disabilities and challenging illnesses access to proper and local healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. They challenge the prerogative that people that are different from you and who may need more support than you are any less of a human than you are. They strive to empower, respect, and accept individuals of all abilities by providing them with a multitude of services. From in-home care, to therapy services, to camp and recreational services, Easterseals does all that they can to provide individuals with all that they need to live a fulfilling life.
One service that has a high impact on our community is one of Easterseals owned and operated camp facilities Timber Pointe Outdoors Center. Many individuals who attend the Dee-Mack schools have had the opportunity to attend, volunteer for, or work for Timber Pointe Outdoors Center. While some individuals have attended Easterseals’s youth and adult TPOC camps, many individuals have also gotten to attend the Camp Hope partner camp. Timber Pointe Outdoors Center hosts Camp Hope, a week long summer camp for kids who have or have had cancer or who have blood disorders, as well as their siblings. Because of their fully inclusive facilities, Timber Pointe Outdoors Center is the perfect place to host this program and many Dee-Mack students have got to witness that magic that they provide for their campers.
Last year, the Easterseals Blackout game raised $1,750. This year, we have already surpassed this… and counting as we still have the tailgate and the game to go. This nonprofit directly affects members of our community and works everyday to better the lives of people around us.
