Welcome to the Dee-Mack Art Gallery. This art column will cover a monthly update of Dee-Mack High School art students’ progress on their creations. This month, seniors Libby Medlin, Abby Jones, and Allison Humphries gave an introduction to their current work, as well as their experience in the art program over the past 3 years. Both of these students are in the advanced drawing and painting class, as well as the portfolio class.
Libby says that in her projects, she always either incorporates a jellyfish or some sort of gor in some way. She adds that her projects usually take up to 4 weeks to fully finish with all of the details. In advanced drawing and painting, Libby is creating a watercolor painting involving a decapitated woman holding her head that incorporates many different mute colors. The other project that she is working on is a 3D structure of a ribcage that will be made out of plaster and ceramics. She will be adding color to this when it comes time to do that, but is not sure what colors will be incorporated yet.
The next art student being featured is Allison Humphries. Allison is in the ceramics class this semester. Ceramics class involves working with clay and creating sculptures. Eventually, the students will be able to work with a pottery wheel. Allison has made a few projects so far including a candle holder as well as a kitchen utensil holder. Both of these pieces are green. She says that it takes about 2 weeks to finish her projects. She states that her favorite thing about the class is working hands on. She says that there is always something to be working on.
Abby Jones is taking multiple art classes this semester including digital art, ceramics, and portfolio art. In digital art, she is working on a picture collage. To do this, she is picking 10 to 15 of her own photos, erasing the background so that it is just the people in the photo, then she is arranging them in an appealing way. In the advanced ceramics class, she is working on two projects. The first one is a clam shell jewelry holder. She says that she created a clam shell out of clay which was made from a plaster mold for each side of the clam. After they hardened, she pressed them together which left her with a perfect clam shell. In the same class, she is also working with realism. The motive of this project was to use real objects and turn them into art. She chose to make clay paint brushes and bend them in letters to spell the word “art”. In the portfolio art class, Abby is using an old book to create something amazing. She folded the pages to create a 3d vase that is displayed inside the book. She used a nature magazine to create flowers and put them inside the vase. Abby states that her favorite thing about the art program is that she has so much freedom to choose what she creates, as well as the type of materials and supplies that she can use.
I will be highlighting these artists and more throughout the year, showing their progress on their work. Check back in monthly to stay updated on what the artists of Dee-Mack are creating!
