Fantasy football is the reason some people watch football. It gets people together and ready for the season. Fantasy football has been around for a long time. It started in 1962 and has been a big part of football ever since. They had to get newspapers and magazines and write down their player stats. It digitally started in 1997 with Yahoo and in 2010 when NFL launched their own platform and that’s when it started booming and everyone started using the platforms and it became a lot more mainstream.
There are many versions of fantasy football you can play such as, Points per reception (PPR) , Half PPR , standard, dynasty, and many more. Dynasty is a version of fantasy league where you draft players and keep them for multiple years instead of having a one year league like most other versions of fantasy football. The most common version of fantasy is PPR. You can trade players and you can also pick up players on waivers too. Some people do it just for fun and others take part in punishments for the losers and money for the winner of the league. Other leagues can have extremely high stakes resulting in thousands of dollars for the winner.
Here at Dee-Mack there are many people who participate in fantasy football leagues. Keagan Brown is a senior currently involved in a 12 man league and they compete using PPR. In years past they have completed a redraft. A redraft is a league that you keep with the same people and rules but just draft every new year. They have done redraft for the past 2 years. They have a punishment for the loser and it is 24 hours at Denny’s and for every waffle you eat is one hour less you have to stay there. The punishment is chosen by the league members before the start of the year and only the person that finishes dead last has to do the punishment. He also mentioned he was in one last year that had just a winner and not a punishment. Lincoln Rassi is another senior who participates in fantasy football and has for many years. His league is similar to Keagans, being a 12 man league and using PPR. Their playoff format is 6 man so half the league makes it rather than only 4 people from the league. While their loser does not have a punishment, their winner receives a trophy. Lincoln’s league has participated in a redraft the past couple of years as well. He says that “fantasy football makes the games more interesting to watch because you have those players on your team and you need them to do good”. They are both looking to have a good year this year and also have fun with it.
