We all know her as the Freshman English and AP English teacher. Now we see her not in her original classroom, but instead subbing for our classes.
Mrs. McMahan is a fan favorite sub, and some students get really excited when they see her in the halls. Mrs. McMahan made the decision to retire after the school 2023-2024 year. Mrs. McMahan decided to retire upon turning sixty. She said during her interview, “One of the things my husband and I always talked about was retiring while we could still travel and gallivant around – we least called it before we hit the nursing home!” She was extremely ecstatic to have retired when she did, retirement has allowed her to do what she wants, like teach when she wants. She has found that particular perk amazing. Her joy about retirement is about more than school. Like the extra cup of coffee she can savor while she chats with her husband, and the ability to be a grandma at any time, any day.
Mrs. McMahan also got to do one of her favorite things which is reading. She said she read 213 books on her Kindle last year.
Mrs. McMahan states a couple things she misses is seeing all her coworkers everyday, and missing her conversations about teaching. She really misses her students. She loved seeing students grasp an idea, making a funny joke, or even a sarcastic comment. It really cracks her up when a student hasn’t heard of her and thinks she’s a push over. She also mentioned that she misses teaching and learning at the same time. She’s glad she gets to do them both again while she’s subbing. She feels that students don’t realize how much she learns from them, and she hopes they learn from her too.
She looks forward to subbing every time she is asked because she loves the challenge that comes to being in another classroom and all the things. She also looks forward to seeing all her friends and a few particular students. Her favorite class to sub for is ironically English, she admits she misses teaching writing. She did also really enjoy subbing science last year, and Mrs. Holly helped her with math. Mrs. McMahan felt she learned so much. She finished the interview by stating that she enjoys all her classes but math because math is hard for her. Although she enjoys the learning experience that comes along with it.
When she is back make sure to stop and ask her how retirement is doing. Ask how many books she read this year so far! Also, make sure to tell her how much you miss her here at Deemack.
Deemack is proud to have her as a substitute teacher!
