Today, we’re talking about our favorite drivers ed teacher, Austin Davis! We first met Davis way back in 2022 whilst he was student teaching with Mr. Linboom. He quickly learned that he enjoyed it all too much. This worked out perfectly for him because a job here suddenly opened up and ever since then he’s been a big part of the Dee-Mack community! Now, let’s all hear about what he does in a day from teaching freshmen how to drive to being on the field during games.
The first thing Davis does in a day is get ready to drive to work, considering it’s about a 25 minute drive he says he wakes up pretty early, gets ready, and starts the day off with some good ole’ chocolate chip protein pancakes and a coffee. He makes these as meal prep over the weekend and just warms them up for a quick and yummy breakfast. The car ride over consists of rock/metal music to get him pumped up and then to really set the tone of the day he greets students walking into school with a smile on his face.
Then, he heads to first hour with an important lesson for the drivers ed class. Today, they all took turns driving the fatal vision car with the vision blurring glasses. Last year the police station and school went half and half on this vehicle to teach the classes the importance of sober driving. After an interesting 1st hour with the sophomore class, Davis then goes on his first drive of the day. They collectively decided that driving to Morton sounded the best today. He says his favorite part of this drive was teaching these new drivers how to safely navigate through a different area that they may not be familiar with. Once 3rd hour hits, he has another drivers ed class that gets to enjoy learning and driving with the fatal vision car as well! Officer Kitts and Chief Kemp join them to do the walking in a straight line test on the students. Mr. Davis then says that 4th hour is his favorite time of day, during this time he has prep. He finishes up some things and then gets to have a chill hour hanging out in the library with his good friend Mr. McCoy. He then goes on another drive with sophomores Rudy Gilbert and Gabby Vitale. They listened to a country playlist with a mix of rock on the way to Morton and made it back just in time for lunch. Davis enjoys spending his lunch period in Mr. Ulman’s class with some juniors, lots of laughter and his leftover chicken noodle soup. He then takes two more sophomore boys to Morton which had lots of fun conversations and new interstate driving. In the car, sophomore William Maloy stated that his favorite thing about Mr. Davis is his overall vibe and constant good energy! Next up, he takes some new drivers, Sami and Ethan, to Morton so he can see them in new situations. With only one more hour in the day he decided to switch things up and take the drivers to Goodfield so they can get a hang of the traffic light in the middle of town. And to end the school day he waits outside his classroom and tells students goodbye.
After students leave he stays in his classroom for a bit and lesson plans, he gets some extra work done, and talks with his coworkers. Finally, it’s time to drive home. Once he’s home he sees his wife and they talk about their days. They eat dinner, wind down and head to bed.
If you see him in the hallway, be sure to give him a fist bump from us over here at the Red & White!
