Meet our Foreign Exchange Students- Shiko Ishak
Shiko Ishakone of our 2024-2025 high school foreign exchange students. He is from the urban side of Sohag, egypt. He makes it a point to share that Egypt is more than just the pyramids and there is a lot of history as it is one of the oldest civilizations. It’s also a great place for tourism. Shiko is bilingual and can speak Arabic, which is his first language, and English.
When interviewed, he mentioned that he chose to become a foreign exchange student, “to try something new and step out of my comfort zone. I also like to see new experiences and live in them, so the exchange program will be a choice for me”. So far, schooling here has been easier than in The United States. Though our days are 1 hour longer, the assignments and homework have been easier.”
His favorite part of the year so far has been sports and our homecoming week. Shiko is involved in cross country and basketball and also plays the drums in the band.
With everything going on, Shiko has been pretty content and not too homesick while living in America, though he occasionally misses home. He voiced that the beginning wasn’t easy but having to adapt was part of the experience as a foreign exchange student. It is now easier as he has support such as his friends and his host family. He is looking forward to new experiences and trying to build his personality and memories.
Shikos favorite food he has tried so far is pepperoni pizza because pork is limited in Egypt. The most surprising thing he has learned while being here is that Americans are obsessed with fantasy football and take sports very seriously.
We were so excited to learn more about our foreign exchange student, Shiko! Check in later this year to learn more about our other foreign exchange student: Martina Mele.
