On November 7th, the Environmental science class of juniors and seniors took a trip to Starved Rock State Park in LaSalle County, Illinois, accompanied by Mrs. Pool. The field trip was to explore the geological features such as canyons caused by forces of nature such as erosion and deposition. The class hiked through the park as a group exploring the French Canyon, the Phoenix Canyon, and the Wildcat Canyon as well as sight seeing on points throughout the trip.
Mrs. Pool makes a point to go every year because it’s near enough to make a day trip and gives students an opportunity to see geological features in real life just as we learn about them. This opportunity helps students to fully understand the terrain and its causes, as well as the history of this state park.
Students also get a day of fresh air and a break from everyday school stress while getting to learn about the importance of taking care of our earth. Mrs. Pool says her favorite part is how engaged students are with this trip and the conversations she gets to have with students, whether about science or not. This field trip was a great opportunity for Dee-Mack’s students to learn about nature and connect our learning in school to “real life.”
